Capacity on Demand:

Overview:

Imagine you launch a dynamite new Web application for a peak season, and it's getting more traffic than you expected. Or say your business takes off and you need growth quickly but can’t afford to take the system down for an upgrade.

With Capacity on Demand from IBM Power Systems, it’s easy to activate dormant processor and memory resources within your system, without taking your system or application down. Whether your need is temporary or permanent; the solution is fast, it’s easy and it’s available today.

Capacity Upgrade on Demand (Permanent):

Capacity Upgrade on Demand provides the ability to bring new capacity on-line quickly and easily. Processors and memory can be activated dynamically without interrupting system or partition operations. Processors can be activated in increments of 1 processor, while memory can be activated in increments of 1 GB. As your workload demands require more processing power, you can activate inactive processors or memory simply by placing an order for an activation feature. You can retrieve, over the Internet an electronically encrypted activation code that unlocks the desired amount of capacity. There is no hardware to ship and install, and no additional contract is required.

On/Off Capacity on Demand (Temporary):

On/Off CoD provides short-term processor and memory activation capability for fluctuating peak processing requirements such as seasonal activity, period-end or special promotions. When you order an On/Off CoD feature, you receive an enablement code that allows a system operator to make requests for additional processor and memory capacity in increments of 1 processor day or 1 GB memory day. The system monitors the amount and duration of the activations. Both prepay and post-pay options are available.

Utility Capacity on Demand:

Utility CoD provides automated use of on demand processors from the shared processor pool for short-term workloads on IBM POWER6™ processor-based systems. Utility CoD is for customers with unpredictable, short workload spikes who need an automated and affordable way to help assure adequate server performance is available as needed. Usage is measured in processor minute increments.

Trial Capacity on Demand:

Trial Capacity on Demand provides the flexibility to evaluate how additional resources will affect system workloads. A standard request is easily made for two processor activations or 4 GBs of memory and an exception request enables all available processors or memory. The standard requests can be made after system installation and again after each purchase of permanent processor activation. An exception request can be made one time, over the life of the machine. Terminology

Adapter
A part that electrically or physically connects a device to a computer or to another device.

ASM
Advanced System Management.

CEC
Central Electronics Complex. This is the collection of processors that run the server.

CLI
Command Line Interface. A type of computer interface in which the input command is a string of text characters. Contrast with Graphical User Interface (GUI).

CoD
Capacity on Demand.

Concurrent Maintenance
This is the process of removing and replacing system components while the system remains under power. Note that this capability cannot be assumed for all system components.

Configuration
The manner in which the hardware and software of an information processing system are organized and interconnected.

CRU
Customer Replaceable Unit.

EED
Extended Error Data.

ESS
Enterprise Storage Server.

Ethernet
A 10-Mbps baseband local area network that allows multiple stations to access the transmission medium at will without prior coordination, avoids contention by using carrier sense and deference, and resolves contention by using collision detection and delayed retransmission. Ethernet uses carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD).

Firewall
A functional unit that protects and controls the connection of one network to other networks. The firewall (a) prevents unwanted or unauthorized communication traffic from entering the protected network and (b) allows only selected communication traffic to leave the protected network.

Fix Pack
A combination of many single fixes (PTFs) for product components that are dependent on or related to each other. It can include new features, functions, or enhancements.

FRU
Field Replaceable Unit.

FSP
Flexible Service Processor.

GUI
Graphical User Interface. A type of computer interface consisting of a visual metaphor of a real-world scene, often of a desktop. Within that scene are icons, representing actual objects, that the user can access and manipulate with a pointing device. Contrast with Command Line Interface.

HMC
Hardware Management Console. The HMC for POWER6 is a system that controls managed systems, such as one or more POWER6 servers.

IASP
Independent Auxiliary Storage Pool.

IDE
Integrated Drive Electronics. A standard interface for IBM compatible hard drives.

Information Center
The source for all of your technical information needs for eServer systems.

IPL
Initial Program Load. Equivalent to a power-on reset.

LIC
Licensed Internal Code, also called server firmware, is software that enables your hardware.

Load Identifier (LID)
Load Identifiers represent the smallest unit or binary image that can be loaded into PHYP, Partition FirmWare, or FSP. LIDs are analogous to files.

Logical Partition (LPAR)
Logical partitioning is the division of a computer's processors, memory, and storage into multiple sets of resources so that each set of resources can be operated independently with its own operating system instance and applications. Thus, it follows that a logical partition is one such set of system resources.

Each partition must have a unique name and at least one partition profile. A partition can have several partition profiles, but it reads only one partition profile when it is activated. You select a partition profile when you activate the partition; otherwise, the default partition profile is used. You can designate any partition profile as the default partition profile.

Partition Profile
A partition profile is the definition of a partition's system resources, which include the relevant CPU, memory, and I/O slots. Partition profiles are stored in and retrieved from system memory upon requests sent from the HMC. After the profiles are set up, the system automatically returns to this configured state when powered on.

Note that you do not have to associate all the partition profiles with system profiles. And, it is possible to associate a partition profile with multiple system profiles.

PHYP
POWER Hypervisor. This is the converged platform firmware for eServer systems.

PTF
Program Temporary Fix. This is a temporary solution to or bypass of a problem diagnosed by IBM as resulting from a defect in a current unaltered release of a licensed program.

RAID
Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks.

Resource Link
A customized Web-based solution providing customers and service representatives all that is needed to plan for, install, and maintain their IBM eServer hardware and software products.

Service Focal Point
Service Focal Point is an application on the Hardware Management Console that enables you to diagnose and repair problems on the system. You can also use Service Focal Point to call service functions on systems and logical partitions that are not associated with a particular problem.

Serviceable Event
System error that requires service. Serviceable events are typically reported to Service Focal Point on the HMC.

Symmetric Multiprocessor.

SRC
System Reference Number.

SRN
Service Request Number.

System Profile
A system profile provides a collection of partition profiles that are started at the same time. Partition profiles are activated in the order of the list defined in the system profile.

TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. TCP/IP provides reliable end-to-end connections between applications over interconnected networks of different types.

Telnet
In the Internet suite of protocols, a protocol that provides remote terminal connection service. It allows users of one host to log on to a remote host and interact as directly attached terminal users of that host.
